    2011 - 10.22

And I don’t mean that solely in a blog-y sort of way (my last post complaining of boredom was obviously some kind of joke, because shortly thereafter, life exploded into a million projects all moving at the speed of construction that has to be done before it snows).

Naw, I’m talkin’ ’bout the end of the world (“Part II: For Reals This Time, Honest!”). Yesterday was Harold Camping’s outside date for TEOTWAWKI, the day for the big fireball, explosions, and all kinds of swell suffering for those of us not so privileged as to have been saved in the “Invisible” Rapture of May 21. Granted, it’s not like I know all that many people who would be (or would want to be) involved in any kind of Rapture (or any religion that worships a torture device, for that matter), although I haven’t seen my drunken felon of a neighbor lately, so maybe it was a different sort of rapture.

Really, folks…I KNOW that the Orionid meteor shower peaked last night, and the ROSAT satellite is going to be making a re-entry in the next couple of days, but no world ending. Sorry, play again next time!

Now, let’s all get back to shaking our heads in disbelief at the sheer number of dimwitted, dangerous people running for the Republican nomination (Jon Huntsman, I’ll grudgingly exclude you from that number for your defense of stuff like logic and science and, you know…reason). Seriously folks, cringe in fear, and remember the old saying: “When fascism comes, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

Back to the salt mines…I may be largely absent until New Years’, or until we get caught up…whichever comes first.

    Sometimes nothing happens

    2011 - 09.07

This is one of those times…when you just sit around saying “boredboredboredboredbored…”

Now, we have business, which is a good thing. But the biggest of the jobs is one where I’m not allowed on the job site (it’s a stupid, institutional workmans’ comp insurance thing), so I’m sidelined until that’s done.

Big storm came through, wiped out the power and several of the roads for a week or so. Nothing new, really. Happens at least once a year.

Politics? A pox on all their houses, especially the houses of the dominionist idiot twins. I guess that also covers religion. Efficiency is key. Amazing that there’s still a drought in Texas, huh? Talk about counting the hits and ignoring the misses………………….

Pickles. lots and lots of pickles. During the short growing season we get, I will cheerfully pickle anything that doesn’t move.

Nothing on television these days. The satellite company generously gave me free Baseball, but still no Science Channel. I find myself watching/listening to  quite a bit of UCTV while I’m working. We’re all eagerly awaiting the November return of The Infinite Monkey Cage and waiting (less than patiently) for Netflix to get off their shit and scrounge up a couple of copies of Wonders of the Universe. I need a Brian Cox fix. Also wondering what the 2013-updated version of Cosmos will look like. I am down with Neil DeGrasse Tyson hosting it, and I am intrigued by the addition of Seth MacFarlane to the production team. I hear a lot of shit about it airing on F*x instead of PBS…but really, who needs science more than F*x viewers? One of my favorite things is watching Bill Nye trying to explain science to F*x News anchors in the absolute dumbest terms possible, while trying to disguise a facial expression of “You are fucking dumber than soap, asshole!” That guy should get hazard pay for being in constant danger of getting burned by the stupid.

This is really just a rather extended period of slow-motion. Mr. Brat is crazy busy, and when that happens, the best thing for me to do is make sure that the clothes are clean, the food is stocked, and have my car keys ready in case something needs to be picked up, delivered, or run over. Things move fast, so the clock ticks a bit slower than my brain moves, that’s all. I’m occupying that vacant brain space by brushing up my math skills…which is rather comical. I have vast blank spots, punctuated by some weird areas of exquisite detail. This means that I have zero problems with many higher skills, but as soon as  you show me something elementary like a fraction bar, I vaporlock. So I’m really drilling on the simple stuff. And it sucks. But it’s the largest hole in my education, so I might as well fill it.

    Must. Have. Knowledge.

    Things I rarely do

    2011 - 08.11

I am not a petition-signer. Mostly, this is because I reside in a state with citizen-initiative ballot measures, and I’ve learned over the years that most of them are pretty dumb and tend to clog up the ballots with mostly useless and ill-defined demands. And I feel even less charitable about online petitions, which are (in my opinion) even less useful than ones on paper.

But, I actually signed an online petition for a change. And here’s why: you know how, when some looney-tune snaps and massacres a bunch of people, and investigators start to uncover all these “warning signs” that something really bad was going to happen…and there is this great hue and cry of “Why didn’t someone dooooooo something???” Well, here’s your chance to watch one of those situations unfold. I have no interest in rehashing all of the writing, so I’ll just link to some pertinent articles on the situation, and then to the petition. Do what you think is best.

Okay. Enough of that. Now, I’ve had my share of death threats and violence from True Believers (TM), and I have the comments here locked down pretty tight. I’ve cheerfully had peoples’ internet accounts revoked (even waayyyy back in the UseNet days) and have no qualms in wasting my time pursuing a variety of law-enforcement remedies. But if you think that escalating nutjobs really ought to get thoroughly evaluated before they start shooting at people, and if it makes you a bit squeamish that this particular nutjob has graduated from  cyberstalker to a real, live, in-person threat, then go visit this petition and make your own decisions.

Update: There has (finally?) been an arrest made in this case, after nearly 5000 people signed the petition, inundating the Montreal police with emails. Here’s a full, exhaustive, blow-by-blow description of the whole affair, with helpful hints on how to handle it if you’re in a similar situation.

    I call bullshit

    2011 - 08.08

Absolute, utter bullshit, too. I can live with the “disclaimer” that the Discovery Channel put on tonight’s Stephen Hawking show (of the “views expressed are those of Stephen Hawking, not us, and he held a gun to our heads and forced us to air it!” variety). But there’s absolutely no excuse for the bullshit of their half-hour “postgame wrap-up” panel. Never mind that the ads for their “Curiousity” show read like a volume of “This Week in Woo,” but to deliberately skew the panel so that there’s only one real voice of unapologetic reason (Sean Carroll, you are my hero of the week!) is just plain sickening. For the record, Carroll did a good job of trying to put Hawking’s opinions into perspective (basically, he said nothing more than “No creator is required to explain the origins of the universe.” Duh.), but with everyone else voicing some version of “Hawking had no right to say that!” his message got a bit lost. Michio Kaku, some Christian astrophysicist, and a Vatican astronomer (though not the cool one from “Religulous”) also made brief appearances to muddy the waters. Add in a theologian and a fencesitter who does not wish to offend, and it was basically a chance to slag Hawking and bitch about how science is too big for its britches. Note to theologian: You’re trying to “save science?” That got the dishtowel thrown at the television by Mr. Brat. Bad enough that you completely ignored everything that anyone else said to smugly wax poetic about what you believe to be true, but the sheer arrogance of that one really got a reaction at my house.

And just as a side note: why is t that scientists are always supposed to be considerate and respectful of religion and respect these separate magisterial domains, but the theologians think nothing of trampling all over those same boundaries?  I will no longer feel a shred of guilt over that “Science: it works, bitches” T-shirt.

Not only that, but Hawking simply made an argument that I instinctively made as soon as I grasped the concept of the Big Bang as a kid…basically, if time starts at the Big Bang, there’s nothing before that, so causality is not required (or, more simply, no creator is needed). I would have liked him to make some better, more involved cosmological arguments against the need for a creator, but hey, it’s not my show. I stayed up late especially to watch it (I have my own personal reasons for wanting to watch Stephen Hawking, if you know me, you’ll understand), but the aftershow left a really nasty apologetic taste in my mouth.

So…Sean Carroll is full of win in SO many ways, Michio Kaku still annoys me, and Stephen Hawking doesn’t believe in God. And the Discovery Channel wussed out. Yup, no surprises.

    Aaaarrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!

    2011 - 07.22

I hate summer. I mean, I really, really HATE summer. It is a hundred degrees outside, and not much better inside. I’ve spent the whole day drafting a promo flyer that, for various reasons, is now only useful folded up and used as a coaster. The cat, normally a heat-seeking fuzzmissle, is sprawled on the stone hearth looking miserable.  My arms are stuck to the desk, and my hair is stuck to everything. Srsly…fuck this shit, bring on the snow:

    Things we learn

    2011 - 07.20

Or, at least things we SHOULD have learned a long time ago. Like “Don’t jump out of trees!” and “Don’t eat broken glass!” Allow me to add “Don’t ever talk about that brilliant idea you had.” Otherwise, you too may end up charged with pulling a skeptical inquiry group out of your ass.

I mean, let’s think about this…I can’t stand being around people, and I especially cringe when I have to be around people who believe everything they hear (even more so when those people define themselves as “skeptical”). Thus, I am totally the wrong person to gently explain to the woo-afflicted just how and why they are stupider than sawdust. I thought we’d learned that lesson with my conspiracy-theorist friend who is currently on a mission to synthesize a universal religion blending all faiths together and then making them somehow agree with Christianity (using a sledgehammer if necessary). My response was to grab him by both ears and yell “What the fuck is wrong with your brain, man?” Perhaps I am not the natural choice to be a public voice for the sort of kinder, gentler skepticism that is so in vogue these days. Frankly, I’m sick to death of shutting up and trying to not offend people. Some people richly deserve to be offended, if you ask me (not that you did, but go read the disclaimer in the sidebar).

So, not only do I need to figure out how to structure this thing without completely destroying my own mind, but I also need to figure out how to deal with the tone wars. I’m not sure that I am really capable of being the kind of pleasant, neutered, bland skeptical thinker that is favored (and honestly, useful) in these situations. I’m sort of an intellectual  street fighter, not a graceful fencer (actually, when I was a fencer, I was constantly steered toward sabre, where small stature and slashing, psychotic aggression are assets instead of liabilities).

And really, I don’t know fuck-all about formal debate. I can smell bullshit, but I couldn’t necessarily tell you where it is. I’m quite sure that I don’t have the academic chops to do it well…with any luck, maybe I can start a ball rolling and hope that someone with a bigger brain and more social smarts takes over so that I can sit back and be the Snarkmaster General.  I can hold my own with most people on many things (astronomy, broader science questions, the origins of social constructs and beliefs), but I have major holes in mathematics, biology, and, um, how to deal with people.

People mystify me. I always say that animals (like cats) never do anything that doesn’t make sense. And they don’t, if you’re another cat, or at least understand cat signals.  But humans constantly do things that are wacky as shit, or signal one thing and do another, or act in a way that is clearly in contradiction to their stated beliefs. Y’all humans are just completely weird, and I do NOT get you at all. To be quite honest, I’m pretty sick of trying, because every time I figure out what a facial expression means, it suddenly means something else (and spare me the Aspergers’ diagnoses, I’ve heard it all before, thankyouverymuch). A pox on all of you.

However, I’m apparently pretty good at being skeptical. Hey, I’ve been doing it since November 18, 1978, when a ten   year old kid saw the images coming from Jonestown and said “I am NEVER going to let anyone do my thinking for me!” There’s something to be said for life experience…if you question things on a regular basis, you tend to make that your default position and do it for everything. Like, say, Dark Energy. Now, I can’t see it, I can’t feel it, can’t really measure it directly, and most emphatically, I don’t “believe in it.” But, observation indicates that something seems to be causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate; “dark energy” is just a phrase used to express the concept of something that we don’t yet understand (because it’s easier than saying “that thing that seems to be causing the expansion of the universe to accelerate”).  I can look at the observed situation and think “Yes, indeedy…there’s definitely something there that needs explaining, by all means, let’s go investigate!” but that’s hardly a religious-type belief in the power of dark energy. Do you see the difference, my conspiracy-theory-prone friend? Now, I’d love to “believe” in dark energy. There is just enough old-school Star Wars weenie in me to see the beauty of the name and the brilliance of whoever came up with it. I could totally dig a light-and-dark matter-and-energy kind of universe in a metaphysical way, if I was a completely different person…as it is, all I can do is marvel at the subtle nod to dualism (and probably geekery) and sort of smile every time I hear someone talk about it.

And why the hell don’t those people bitch about gravity? They all whine “Aw, evolution is just a theory!” like that actually proves something. Gravity is just a theory. So is Relativity. They (like evolution) have been extremely well-tested. Your cell phone, when I let go of it, will fall to the pavement and break like the cheap toy it is. It will never fly up and soar away to Mars to live happily with little green men.  Unless you’re really into quantum mechanics, in which case you can probably work out an infinitesimal probability for just such an occurrence…but if that’s the case,  it’s a good bet that you’re probably here for the dick jokes, not the science. So carry on with that.

“Invisible” sure looks a lot like “Nonexistent”

    2011 - 05.24

Y’know, I’ve been sort of waiting to hear the explanation for the RaptureFail we had this weekend. As someone who is ineligible for any type of supernatural salvation, I was genuinely interested to hear the soothsayer’s explanation of the nonevent, and even more interested to glean his opinion of his terribly open-pocketed followers.

What I got was that it was an “invisible” rapture (O rly? can I write an “invisible” check to pay my credit cards?), and that the people who emptied their bank accounts, quit their jobs, and neglected their kids’ well-being should have sought qualified financial advice (or divine financial advice, I guess…personally, I would have suggested psychiatric advice). I also learned that mortal humans (soothsayers, presumably, included) can’t possibly understand the Bible, though it doesn’t seem to stop them from predicting the end of the world The world’s still ending on October 21, by the by. Again.

    Gullibility Kills
. I swear I am going to stencil that on my fucking car.

Does it all piss me off? Yeah. It’s a mix of emotions when something like this happens. Schadenfreude (bitch, please…you felt it too), pity (for the easily-led), lack of pity (for the easily-led who have willingly made themselves so), and sadness that there are just so damn many of them.

I’ll admit that I’ve never really understood the whole Rapture idea. You get whisked away to heaven to happily sit on a cloud and watch humanity (and, presumably, animals and plants) undergo pain and suffering.  I mean, that is one seriously fucked-up idea of paradise. I can’t think of a single sane, compassionate person who’d even be interested in this, never mind praying for it to happen as soon as possible. Moreover, I think it’s telling that no one thinks that the Rapture will happen in, say 500 or 1000 years. It HAS to happen during your lifetime, or else. I mean, being one of the elect just isn’t as much fun if you have to die first and sit around mouldering for hundreds of years before you finally get the goodies. Besides, it wouldn’t be as much fun watching strangers from the future suffer; you’d want it to be that atheist jackwagon who sits in the next cubicle, or your pantheist next-door neighbor who has some kind of heathen altar in the living room, or even the guy upstairs who plays his stereo too loud. It’s no fun being raptured unless you have a personal stake in the misery of the damned.

They think I’M twisted and sick?

And it’s depressing, because no one learned a damned thing. It’s all a paradigm that engenders irrational, magical thinking. We can easily discount the one-off whackjobs, but we still swallow the rest of it without ever ONCE wondering if maybe our own, safely “mainstream” beliefs are a bit…weird.

I dunno…I have precious little confidence in humans (and particularly Americans) to think rationally…or to even recognize that it’s an issue. Just once, I’d like to have a debate about religion that didn’t end with the other person citing faith and smiling smugly, because you really can’t make a rational argument against something that’s inherently irrational. To quote our old friend llt:

“Okay, if you get faith, then I get a fucking death ray.  ZAP! I win.”

    If only.

    The Lows of the Mega-Los

    2011 - 05.07

So, a while back, I went to the local hardware store in search of a certain stain to match one I already had. I was armed with the color code, formula, and other pertinent information, but was informed by the hardware guy that the only place to get said brand of stain was now Mega-Lo hardware.  Since I really needed a perfect match, I asked if he’d mind me going to the mega-Lo to get the stain, and after an odd look, he indicated that 1.) I was weird; and 2.) It was just dandy with him if I went there for my stain.

It is with great trepidation that I go to any Mega-Lo store, be it Mega-Lo Hardware, Mega-Lo Office Supply, or Mega-Lo Organic. Every time I go into one, I come out in a rage over something. Usually, it’s the Mega-Lo Organic, and I get royally pissed off that an organic store, supposedly in the business of encouraging people to live a less-artificial life, carries almost no materials for making your own stuff. Yes, they want you to use organic cosmetics, but they want you to buy their ready-made products instead of making your own. There are next to no bottles, tins, and raw materials. It’s infuriating.

And the Mega-Lo Hardware is the same way. They run heartwarming adverts that show how they will help you do-it-yourself, but the second you deviate from their predetermined beaten path, you become the enemy. So, as long as I was there buying the stain that only they sell, I thought “Hey, maybe I can buy a ceiling tile.”

Yes, it IS an odd thought to have, but I am in the process of trying a sample piece of fiberoptic starfield to hang in the bedroom, and I need something to run the fiberoptic strands through to hold them. So I figured I’ll get a 2×2 acoustic ceiling tile, paint it black, and Bob’s your uncle. Well, you can’t buy just one tile, you have to buy the whole box. Okay, I understand that, they’re pretending to be a  wholesaler for dummies (once you’ve gotten used to buying wholesale, you see right through the ruse to the retail reality). But then I saw a single tile lying on the floor. On closer inspection, it appeared to have fallen out of a display, and had a badly dinged-up corner. I asked a salesperson if I could buy it, and he sent me to customer service. The two ladies at the Customer Service desk loved the fiberoptic idea, but weren’t sure how to sell just one damaged tile, so they called (I assume) The Wizard of Oz, who was hiding in an office somewhere, and who informed them that under no circumstances would the Mega-Lo Hardware allow me to buy a single damaged ceiling tile. Ever.  So, what I got from this exchange was as follows:

“WE WOULD RATHER THROW THIS AWAY THAN SELL IT TO YOU.”

Clear as a fucking bell, straight from the Wizard of Oz.

I feel valued, I tell you what. Now, my local hardware guy would have said “Hey, just take it, I’m just going to throw it out anyways,” knowing that I’d be back for the paint and framing materials for the finished panel. And then we would have argued that I wanted to pay for it, and he would have finally given up and rung up “Miscellaneous: $5.00,” and everyone would win.I get my tile, he gets $5 for his garbage, and the landfill gets less crap in it.

So, this morning, I called the local guy, who doesn’t sell ceiling tiles, but he’s going to ask a couple of guys that he knows and see if he can score me a piece of scrap tile. And laughing at my rant, he told me again how he appreciates my business. And he’ll have my paint and framing materials ready for me this afternoon.

So, that’s the state of modern Mega-Lo Business: “We would rather throw stuff away than sell it to you.” Fuck you,  Mega-Lo Hardware, and the lawn tractor you rode in on.

    Here’s something I forgot…

    2011 - 03.25

I do a lot of painting. Not the artistic kind, but with an industrial spray gun. And I loathed it. Painting complicated  shapes outdoors on a sunny day is evil, especially if, like me, you are blessed with eyes that focus independently of each other and can’t see in 3D very well. Plus, the paint gun is heavy and I get paint all over me. So I set out to make painting more palatable.

The first thing I did was take over the “Bug Haus,” Mr. Brat’s shop annex that was designed as a home for my ancient Superbeetle and his ancient VW bus. Walking on a flat surface did wonders for my happiness (and my ankles). I bought a nifty painting outfit at a military surplus store, a set of coveralls with hood, and a pair of steel-toed Birkenstock clogs. Add my crappy little mp3 player, some latex gloves, and a respirator, and we’re good to go. I look like an alien (I really need to get a picture of this), but I don’t have to change in and out of “painting clothes” several times a day, my feet don’t hurt, my work boots aren’t covered in paint, and my boogers aren’t black for days. Total cost: $62 (I already had the mp3 player and respirator, and I live in latex gloves anyhow), most of that was the $45 secondhand Birkis (I hate rubber clogs, but in this case, I’ll make an exception, because I can use some pretty scary cleaners on them, because I can replace the footbeds whenever I want, and because if I drop a huge hunk of metal on my foot, it don’t hurt much…let’s see ya do that with crocs, hipster).

And then I had a brainstorm (more of a drizzle, really)…buy a lighter gun, one that didn’t have the paint pot attached to it. Well, THAT completed my “happiness through toxic chemicals” bonanza. With this new gun, I use less than half the paint I was going through before, and I am more agile and accurate…not to mention faster. This new gun rocks, although I had to drive several hours to get it and had to spend a bit of time tinkering with it to make it work right. Cost: $59.95. Yeah, it’s cheap crap and I wouldn’t try to paint my car with it, but for my purposes, it is ideal.

So, I am off to paint several fun things, and not feeling bad at all about it.

    Supermoons and crazy chicks

    2011 - 03.24

So, I celebrated the “Extreme Supermoon” by going to the opera, sort of. The Metropolitan Opera livecasts some of their operas to movie theaters all over the country. Although I am not terribly visually oriented and didn’t find it all that much different than watching it on TV, I’m thinking it’s a good way for people to see their first opera, because you don’t have to deal with the expensive lousy seats, the travel to a big city, and the pure snobbery that surrounds most classical music (much of it perpetrated by people whose biggest interest is donor recognition). I guess I had issues with the whole concept of broadcasting from backstage during intermissions…we wonder why nothing has magic or splendor anymore, but we demand all-access, behind-the-scenes  information on everything. But the opera was pretty good (Lucia di Lammermoor, or for the average American, that song that the blue alien diva chick sings in The Fifth Element). Odd costuming, transplanting it to the Victorian era, but fun nonetheless. Lucia was suitably nuts and reasonably bloody.

Still broke. I keep quoting jobs, and keep getting them (in theory), but no one is sending any checks. I’m sure that once spring is in full swing, we’ll get the usual brief inundation, but the winter slowdown has been pretty bad this year. I am in desperate need of a haircut, as my fringe is almost down to my chin, but I’m using it to protest the lack of work. When we get paid, I cut my hair.

Not that I don’t have anything to do…I’ve been working on finishing the bedroom, which means sheetrocking the inside of the closet, which totally sucks. The first day, I ended up covered in joint compound. The second day, I had bruised shins from standing on the ladder (I fall off ladders and am usually banned from doing high-angle work, but since it was inside a closet with nowhere to fall, I got special permission from Mr. Brat). I need to finish the bedroom so that I can get the bed and furniture out of the library, so that we can build the bookshelves, so that we can move the boxes of books out of “the scary room,” so that we can enlarge the master bath into that space (provided that I manage to finish the downstairs bath first so we have someplace to shower and…well, you know). It all makes perfect sense. Well, except the part where Mr. Brat decided to paint the bedroom a violent deep purple. I suspect our bedroom is going to end up looking like a crash pad, and I’ll have to buy an overhead projector and do psychedelic liquid projection shows on the wall…and make quilts out of old bandannas.

But the last few days have been frustrating. Mr. Brat is notoriously bad at paperwork and quoting jobs, so he works at it for 30-45 minutes, then wails “I don’t know how people DO this all day!” And I explain that they pay people to do it for them, so he gives me the quote to do. And when I’m finished, he rips it apart and does it over because I “charge too much.” It’s worth noting that when I do most of the quotes, we tend to make a small profit, and when he does most of the quotes, we tend to lose money…just sayin’, is all.

So, check your local movie theaters, go see an opera.
